What the $8,300 figure means
A median is the middle price: half of funerals cost less, half cost more. The NFDA figure is from 2023, and it is the latest median the association has published. Prices in 2026 are likely different, so treat it as a starting point, not a quote.
This is trade-association data, not a government statistic. It describes funeral home charges. A burial plot, a headstone, flowers or an obituary may be billed separately, so ask each provider for an itemized price list.
Burial or cremation
In 2023 the median funeral with viewing and cremation was $6,280, about $2,020 less than the median with viewing and burial. Skipping the viewing, or choosing direct cremation, usually costs less again.
The choice is personal. What matters for planning is that someone has to pay within days, often before an estate is settled or any bank account is released.
| Type of funeral | 2023 median cost |
|---|---|
| Viewing and burial | $8,300 |
| Viewing and cremation | $6,280 |
| Difference | $2,020 |
How families pay for it
Most families use savings, a life insurance payout or a small final expense policy. A final expense policy is whole life insurance with a modest face amount, meant to cover the funeral and a few final bills. Your beneficiary can use the money however they need.
