About half of adults are covered
The 2026 Insurance Barometer Study reports life insurance ownership at about 52% of adults. That is what people say they have, so it includes coverage through work as well as policies they bought themselves.
This is an industry study, not a government count. We cite it because it is the long-running national survey on the question, and it is published by LIMRA and Life Happens.
The coverage gap
In the 2026 study, 29% of adults said they don't have life insurance but recognize they need it. Another 9% have some and say they need more. Together, the study puts the gap at 99 million adults who could use help getting coverage.
Coverage through an employer often ends when the job ends. If that is all you have, it may not be there when your family needs it.

Working out what you need
Start with what your family would have to pay without your income: the mortgage, debts, childcare, school and final expenses. Then subtract savings and any coverage you already have.
Our life insurance needs calculator does that math with you. If you'd rather talk it through, see our life insurance service. We'll tell you honestly if you already have enough.
